The Cold Plunge
The coldest room in the house and the one people write home about. Thirty seconds is a success. Thirty seconds, done properly, is honestly hard.
Water temperature: 6 °C, drawn nightly, never warmed. See when it runs quietest.
The house method
- Two slow breaths at the rail. Exhale as your feet leave the step.
- Step down the ladder, do not jump. The floor is 1.9 metres down and the surprise is better paced.
- Submerge to the shoulders once. The gasp is the point; fight only the urge to leave.
- Out at thirty seconds, robe, straight to the Resting Hall. The shiver you keep is the prize.
Where the water comes from
The plunge is fed from the cold well in the yard, not the spring. It is drawn and replaced every night at close, which is why the water reads 6 °C in January and 6 °C in July. Nobody has ever recorded it warmer; the house intends to keep that streak.
Honest note: cold plunging is not for everyone. If you are pregnant, managing a heart or blood-pressure condition, or simply uncertain, take the warm rooms and skip the plunge entirely. The house will never talk you into it.
Thirty seconds, properly
The plunge runs with every session. The steward on deck will count you down if you want counting.
