The Resting Hall
The last room of every session and the least optional. Heat and cold both end here or they do not really end at all.
Water temperature: Blankets, low lamps, a slow clock. See when it runs quietest.
House rules of the hall
- No talking. Whispering is a border case; napping is encouraged.
- Blankets are folded, not crumpled, and returned to the shelf by the door.
- The low lamps dim a stop every hour after eight. The hall closes with the house.
- Tea comes round on the half hour: linden at dusk, nettle in the morning.
Why rest is the step
The 1954 house manual calls the Resting Hall "the room where the water is kept". However many plunges you took, the body needs a quiet quarter hour to decide what to do with it. Skip the hall and the cold leaves you wired; keep it and you leave with the flat, even calm regulars call the Marrow feeling.
The clock on the mantel runs two minutes slow on purpose. The plaque says "for latecomers". It has never been corrected.
End every session here
